Disclaimer

CleanETFs is a research and comparison tool. It reports what funds cost, from the documents their issuers publish. It is not investment advice, it is not tax advice, and nothing it displays is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security.

We are not registered

CleanETFs is not registered as an investment adviser with the US Securities and Exchange Commission or with any state securities regulator, and not in any other jurisdiction. Nothing here is tailored to your circumstances, because we do not know them — no figure on this site takes account of your income, your tax position, your other holdings or what you are trying to achieve. Before acting on anything you read here, speak to someone who is registered and who does know those things.

Our lists are a screen, not an endorsement

Funds are sorted into lists by applying published criteria. A fund appearing on any list means it met, or failed, a stated test — it does not mean we think you should own it, or that it is suitable for you, or that it will perform in any particular way. A fund we have not looked at is not thereby worse than one we have.

Data

Fund information is sourced from the fund providers — chiefly the management report of fund performance, the prospectus and the issuer's own holdings files — and market data from third-party feeds. Figures may be delayed, incomplete or wrong. Where a value is not sourced it is shown as N/A rather than estimated, and rows we have not yet reconciled against a source document are labelled unverified on the page rather than presented as if they were. Always verify against the fund's own documents and your broker's statements before acting.

Fund names, tickers and trademarks belong to their respective owners and are used here only to identify the funds they name. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any fund provider.

Cheaper is not better

This site ranks funds by what they cost, because cost is knowable in advance and returns are not. That is the whole reason for the emphasis — it is not a claim that the cheapest fund is the best one, that cost is the only thing that matters, or that a lower all-in figure will produce a higher return. Two funds at the same price can hold entirely different things, and the one that suits you may be the more expensive one.

Tracking difference describes what a fund did over a past period against its index. Past performance does not indicate future results.

Cost arithmetic is not a projection

Where this site shows what a rate of ongoing drag compounds to, that is arithmetic on assumptions stated on the page — a fixed starting sum, a fixed rate of growth, no contributions and no tax. It is a way of putting a percentage on a scale you can feel. It is not a forecast, it is not a claim about any fund, and no real portfolio grows at a constant rate.

Tax, and withholding in particular

Nothing here is tax advice. Where this site describes foreign withholding tax — the treaty rate on foreign dividends, and how the recoverable portion changes with a fund's structure and the account it is held in — it is describing how a published set of rules operates, not advising you on your own position.

That treatment depends on facts we do not have: your residence, your account types, your other holdings and your filing obligations. Tax rules and treaty terms also change. Confirm anything you intend to act on with a qualified adviser, and do not treat a table on a marketing site as a substitute for one.

Who this is for

The funds covered here are listed on US exchanges and file with the SEC. Nothing on this site is tailored to the law or tax treatment of any particular country, and no figure here accounts for your residence, your account types or your filing obligations, which vary by jurisdiction. Wherever you use it from, you do so on your own initiative. Consult a qualified adviser.

No warranty, and what we are liable for

This site is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including as to accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose or uninterrupted availability. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage — including trading losses, lost profits or tax consequences — arising from your use of, or reliance on, anything published here. You are responsible for your own investment decisions.

How we are paid

By subscription, from readers. We accept no payment, commission, referral fee or other consideration from any fund provider, issuer or dealer in connection with anything on this site, and inclusion on a list cannot be bought.
